Are You Using the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type?
Determine Your Skin Type
As you are aware, skin types come in a wide variety which differ in many ways, not just skin tone or complexion. No individual's skin is an exact match to another. This makes finding the right skincare products, a cleanser specifically, to be a little bit of a challenge for some people. You may or may not know already, but your skin type is a direct contributor to the effectiveness and potency of the products you use on your skin.
Since skincare products work better if they are selected with your skin type in mind, products come in many different shades and flavors of the same thing. Choosing the wrong line of products may be negatively impacting the results you are seeing on your skin, or even causing harmful issues. The easiest way to begin is to identify the obvious aspects of your skin type. Your skin type is unique to you and has plenty of character to it. Which means you need the right cleanser to match that character! If you are unsure of your skin type, test it for yourself. Start by washing any makeup or dirt off your face with a gentle cleanser and some warm water. After you have cleaned your face wait about an hour and dab a tissue over your T-zone (the area where your nose meets your forehead). If the tissue is oily you have either an oily skin type or a combination skin type. Reflect on how your skin feels after the hour wait as well. This will help you to also determine if your skin is naturally drier or remains moist.
How to Pick the Right One
There are a wide range of cleansers out there suited for all different types of skin. Cleansers can be purchased as gels, foams, clays, oils, creams, bars, and even powders. Each individual cleanser is usually specific to a skin type based on the ways it reacts with the skin. By now you probably realize there are a ton of options and decisions to make when selecting cleansers. You also know that each cleanser can, and should, be selected with your skin type in mind. So how do you pick the right one? With all these options in front of you, you might feel overwhelmed. However, follow these tips and keep your personal skin tone in mind and you will no doubt pick the right one. If you have dry skin, you want a cleanser that provides some moisture as you cleanse. These types include those that are creamy or oily textured. This will help you retain your natural moisture and prevent you from further drying your skin as you use the product. You may also want to look for ingredients such as milk thistle, aloe, or glycerin to give your skin some added hydration. Try to stay away from products that are foamy or in bar form which will irritate and dry your skin even further.
Alternatively, for oily skin types, you may want to look directly towards those foamy textured products. Since bar and foamy products typically tend to dry the skin this is a good counter to oh-too-oily skin. Just be careful that you do not go overboard and are still using proper techniques and paying attention to the way your skin reacts. Otherwise, you may find yourself harming your skin.
If you still are not sure which one is right for you, opt for something that works well with most types. These are usually cream based and do not contain irritating ingredients such as fragrances and parabens. These cleansers will usually be made with more natural ingredients such as almond, coconut, or jojoba oil.
How to Get the Most out of Your Cleanser
Choosing the wrong cleanser is not necessarily life or death, but you certainly will not be getting the most from your cleanser. In a worst-case scenario though, you could be causing your skin irritation, or just not seeing good results in general.
To get the most out of your cleanser, make sure you first have the correct cleanser selected. Once you find that perfect somebody (the cleanser, obviously) you want to make sure you are using it correctly as part of your daily routine! It's best to use a cleanser each night during your bedtime routine so that you can wash away any impurities, dirt, makeup, and dead skin your face has encountered throughout the day. Cleansing with the appropriate type for your skin will yield the best results overall. Finding the right cleanser and getting the most out of your product may seem difficult at first, but just remember that you may be harming yourself more than you are helping by using the wrong product.
